pumpkin picking


Yesterday we found ourselves on a nearby farm, full of harvest-time spirit, and ready to pick some pumpkins.  Unfortunately, we did not adequately brace ourselves for the reality that every other family east of the Mississippi had the same exact plan for their Sunday, October the 14th, and so we got a bit of a jolt when we arrived and were swept into a sweaty, pushing, pumpkin-hunting throng, making our surroundings feel about as bucolic as Times Square on New Year's Eve.  Once we got over the shock, we were able to embrace the experience for what it was, reconcile ourselves to standing in huge lines, and make peace with the fact that we were hemorrhaging cash for hay rides, moon bounces, and greasy junk food.  We also managed to find some places of beauty away from the hoards...wandering through an epic corn maze, and sitting on pumpkins in a distant field.  It ended up being kind of gorgeous and perfect, actually.  Even if I did come home with a splitting headache ;)

  1. I hope a good night's sleep was just what you needed to cure the headache. It looks like you had a beautiful day for hayrides, pumpkin hunting and finding your way out of a maze. So glad you were able to make lemonade out of the lemons.

  2. we had the EXACT same experience yesterday at a local pumpkin patch. majority of time was spent in the car waiting in the long line to nowhere. we've now sworn off pumpkin patches on the weekends. sheesh.

    however, that said, and like your experience, it ended up being a nice family time and the caramel apple made it all worth it ;)

  3. Your photos look peaceful enough, but I know what it's like to have to wait for people to get out of your shot to get the composition right!

    I kind of want to go to a corn maze, and I don't even have kids yet :)

    Yes, the number of times something looks so awesome that EVERYone decides to do it at once...glad you were able to enjoy the experience for what it was.

    We did go blackberrying though - totes bucolic, happy stained baby face, but vicious thorns!

  7. Hi Leigh. Does your baby have on an Amber teething necklace? If so, do you like it and where did you get it? I have a six month old little girl and wanted to see what other moms thought. Beautiful family, by the way:)
