ReplyDeleteThese are beautiful! I need some breastfeeding advice. I have a son (he's my first), 7.5 months old. He had 4 teeth on top and then finally got 2 on the bottom and now he can bite!! He bites once or twice a day and man it hurts!!! Quitting breastfeeding is not an option for me. People have said to yell or flick him or press my nail into his hand to deter him but that is not me. Do you have any advice for a way to gently discourage him from biting?
ReplyDeleteI've nursed 4 and those biters can be a lot to handle.
Delete2 strategies- A) Simply put them down and say no biting. You won't see immediate results, but it keeps the biting from being a habit and eventually they learn. If you see an increase in biting, that means they are getting it and want to see if they can get the same reaction every time. Not fun, but has been effective every time.
B) He might be nursing out of boredom. That age is much more interested in the big world, but sometimes needs a little nudge to engage. They nurse because they want to do something, but just eating isn't enough, so they bite. Try to redirect him to another activity before trying to nurse.
Or detach him and get him busy if you notice he is not nursing aggressively. Biting is not a good way to get milk and a hungry baby will usually avoid it.
Good Luck and here's a fantastic free hotline for very sound breastfeeding advice

ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if you'll weigh in on the latest Time magazine cover. Love your blog and your breastfeeding in art series. We had the same due date-- my son was born on the 6th-- and I looked through those images while looking forward to feeding my little one.
