morning goodbye

Every morning when Taro leaves for work, the boys have a tradition of seeing him off with kisses and hugs before jumping up and down wildly and shouting "LOVE YOU!" until he's out of sight. It's super-sweet.

When we lived in our apartment the ritual was no less epic, but instead of walking for a couple of blocks to the bus stop before disappearing from sight, Taro would be gone as soon as the elevator arrived. To compensate for the speediness of his departure, he would always get on an empty elevator and then shout "LOVE YOU" back at us all the way down, six stories.

One morning during the usual ruckus, one of our neighbors appeared in the hallway. I thought she was going to grumpily ask us us to knock it off, but instead she said,

"You have to get this on videotape."

So, for a few weeks I documented the daily goodbyes and compiled them into a little movie. May it brighten your day:

  8. This reminds me so much of my family! My brother Ross insisted on waving goodbye to everyone until they were out of sight -- so much so that now, when anyone leaves the house, we all say "Gotta wave to Rossy" no matter who is pulling out of any of our driveways. (He's about to turn 29, by the way.)

Your boys are too, too cute. Wish my day started with people screaming "LOVE YOU!" to me at the top of their lungs!

  13. For my husband, I know his goodbyes (je t'aime Papa) and his hellos when he gets home at the end of a long day, are the absolute highlight of his life. I know it's probably harder then I know for him to leave us at home and be the financial backbone of the family, but the fact that our little boy is always so loving makes every hard earned dollar worth it.

  21. This is one of the sweetest, most adorable things I've ever seen. I love it even more b/c one of my earliest childhood memories is of me as a toddler kissing my mom goodbye as she left for work. :)
