We have some kind of big news that I have not yet delved into here on ye olde blogue, but I think it's getting to be time. And when I say "kind of big news" I mean like, really big.
In less than two weeks, we are moving.
Out of NYC.
To the suburbs.
Out of the apartment my children were born in.
Into a house.
Our first house.
We are filled with excitement and melancholy, happiness and stress, expectation and fear.
Most of all, we are filled with readiness.
We love New York so much (we have lived here for over thirty-six years, combined), yet we know it is now time for us to leave. We are falling in love with a new place, yet the relationship is untested.
Right now we are in this weird limbo, basically prepared for moving day in all the technical ways, and yet just kind of waiting through the last days and weeks.
I just told Taro, right now it's like we are in a holding pattern and when the holding pattern ends we're going to have a whole new life.
And that's the news.

Best of luck to you and your (growing) beautiful family. embrace the change with open arms and don´t forget 11 11 11 is this friday, a great day to start a new cycle!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations guys! How wonderful for you! I hope you guys have a lovely, lovely time in the 'burbs! I bet the boys will LOVE it!
ReplyDeletep.s HOLY COW HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN *ALIVE* for 36 years let alone lived in one place that long!?!?!? You look 25!
Georgia, it was a typo!!! I meant to say "we" when I typed "I". I'll actually turn 33 four days after we move.
ReplyDeleteI've lived in NYC for over 10 years, Taro has lived here for over 20, and this is the only place our kiddos have ever lived :)
Thanks for the well-wishes, ladies!
Oh my gosh!! Leigh! Excited for you but sad for me and my imagined future playground meetups this spring. Wishing you a smooth move and lots of bike trails for your new rides.
ReplyDeletePlayground meetups can still happen, Ashley!!! We'll have a car. In fact, with three kiddos in tow, I'm sure there will be a higher probability of making it to NYC playdates with the help of a minivan than if I still had to rely on the MTA ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, wow. I have no trouble feeling what you're feeling because it's exactly what we were doing about this time last year with the Great Move to Texas. It's a lot of change, and I remember having a hard time feeling the same way about it from one minute to the next for a long time even once we were here, but it levels out eventually. I'm excited for you. A house! Love you.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your move--we left Brooklyn for the 'burbs of Connecticut last Winter. We miss it so, but are loving all the new opportunities for nature and wide open spaces we've found. Good luck to you!
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful news. I have another box of clothes for the kiddos that can be opened in their new home!
ReplyDeleteAll sorts of new adventures await you! Here's hoping the holding pattern dissipates quickly. I'm in one myself and it makes life interesting to say the least. Congrats on the house! So fun.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Change is always good, though sometimes difficult at the beginning. And good luck with the actual move - do you think you will throw away a lot of stuff? For me each move is a great de-junking project. :)
ReplyDeleteWe made the same move 15 years ago after we had our third babe in the city! It was a difficult decision, but we've never regretted it. In fact, we enjoy the city even more now when we go in. NJ is the best kept secret.
ReplyDeletecongratulations on the move! NYC is the hardest place to move out of, but luckily you'll be only a train ride away. i wanted to move but i will always remember driving across the George Washington Bridge sobbing as i left...still worth it though ;)
ReplyDeleteOh Leigh, I just love your beautiful blog.
ReplyDeleteI know this sort of change pulls at you in both ways.
But, alas, change is life...and life is beautiful.
We did this too, moved from SF to suburbs, and there are so many days when I look over the bay and see my favorite city in the world, and then I become thankful for my washing machine and backyard.
Best of luck to you guys! The suburbs can rock!!!
yay! sooooo exciting! can't wait to hear all about the new place :) if there's anything i can do or any help i can offer while you guys are moving please please PLEASE let me know...i'll only be a short drive away!!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteNew Jersey has some beautiful places!! You will love it. I have a friend who lives there, and the way she describes her little community, family life, and morning walks makes me want to move there and be her neighbor. Her blog: http://emmasage.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your move Leigh, massive change - but a house! Fabulous, lucky you. Enjoy making it yours x
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that is huge news! I was not expecting to read that! Congratulations and I can't wait to hear more about your new abode. And I know exactly this holding pattern you speak of. So wonderful when you're rewarded w/ the end of the limbo state!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on such a huge decision! Enjoy all the new changes - and have fun with it all!
ReplyDeletewe just moved to nj in sept. it was super emotional to leave the apt where my little one was born. it's been a big adjustment, but I have found a small community of brooklyn ex-pat homebirthers so that definitely helped ease the transition. I would check out Holistic Moms Network if you have a chance. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting Ms. L! Congrats and many blessings on your new home.
ReplyDeleteHi there- I rarely comment on your blog, but I love love love it! I have now lived in New Jersey for a year, just outside of new york city and have two boys close to your boys' age. Let me know if you need any info on great parks for busy boys or places to shop! My blog is wwww.itsspelledcaitlin.blogspot.com so you know that I am not crazy! ha!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to New Jersey! Be prepared to hear NYC only referred to as "the city". It's just understood. "Wanna go into the city?" :-) Unless you're speaking to someone from southern NJ...then "the city" means Philadelphia!
ReplyDeleteWow! So excited for you. Good luck with the move!
ReplyDeleteI was born in the city and but grew up in Jersey and I have to say that I had the best of both worlds. We spent plenty of time in the city as kids, definitely as teens and I even took summer classes at Parsons when I was in highschool. This is a great move for a growing family. Even now, when I cross the river to visit my mom, my shoulders automatically drop.. prepare to be more relaxed & Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is the NJ doesn't know what is about to hit it!!!! It will never be the same!!!
ReplyDeletewe moved to maplewood, nj two summers ago from brookyn, lot of ex-nyers with families out here, i still get homestick, but there is a lot to like out here too, welcome to jersey and congrats on your expanding family!
ReplyDeleteWow, what big news! I had to scroll all the way to this post to see what move you were talking about (havent checked in a while). I am sad we never bumped into each other in central park but many good wishes in your new home!
