I can't believe I hadn't heard the news!! I am so out of the loop, I guess. My grandfather, Avon Long, actually helped Lena Horne on her path to stardom - he was performing as a headliner at the Cotton Club and Ms. Horne was a chorus girl. My grandfather's female partner in the act couldn't go on, for some reason, and my grandfather handpicked Ms. Horne out of the chorus to fill in for his partner. And thus, a star was born. When she had a solo show on Broadway years back, my grandfather and mother went to see it, and Ms. Horne thanked him during her show. I wish I'd had the chance to meet her during her lifetime!! Aw, stormy weather indeed!
Diva Las Vegas, that story is AMAZING! I read Lena's obit in the NYTimes yesterday and her roots at the Cotton Club were cited. So cool that you have a personal connection to history in that way.
